Visul papadiei / The dandelion's dream

Insa cine a mai vazut o floare zburatoare?

Esti o floare intre flori!
Daca ai zbura la cer,
pajistea n-ar fi la fel!
 Fara tine pe pamant,
eu nu as putea sa cant.
Fara frumusetea ta,
pasarile n-ar canta…
Daca tu nu ai mai fi,
drumul meu s-ar poticni.
De ce oare te-as schimba
cand tu esti oglinda mea?”

Iar micuta floare, printre suspine si oftaturi ii raspunse:
“Nu sunt foarte delicata,
nu sunt nici prea-parfumata
in lumina trecatoare
sunt o pata de culoare.
Primavara-i pe trecute,
oamenii au sa ma uite…
De-as fi libera sa zbor,
nici nu mi-ar pasa ca mor!…”
Induiosat de rugamintile ei, Soarele ii facu o promisiune:
“Copiii nu te vor uita…
Sa rada ii vei invata
iar ei sa zbori te-or ajuta,

(o poveste de Iosif Dragu / a story by Iosif Dragu)

PS I promise to all my non-Romanian friends to return with the English translation tomorrow. Have a good night!

Inghetata, careva?! / Ice cream, anyone?!

Things don’t go as planned all the time, sometimes they arrange themselves. This is what an old Romanian saying teaches us. And how true it is! The coasters above are my last experience of this kind. It started with ‘balloons’ so I began cutting linen circles. Yellow, cyclamen, light pink with white polka dots…  The final idea was still unclear (nothing new so far), so I just continued cutting, putting the circles randomly on the table.
In the end, I take a look at it and what do you know? A sweet, lovely coloured ice cream sat right there, in front of me. Would you have resisted it? I couldn’t! I added it a cone and I multiplied it to six. So friends can have one too! Perfect for today, at 27°C!! J

Perne cu simboluri primordiale up-date / Pillow cases with primordial symbols up-date

Two days ago, I've finished an order for brown primordial symbols pillow cases. Coffee & milk brown. :-) In the picture above, I've attached a sample of the fabric I used for the back side - a fine duck, slightly elastic - and also the three different colours of thread for the embroidery. I hope you like it!

 curious chick

Sometimes, because of some outer events pressure, I feel my head bursting with thoughts and ideas I have the need to lay down somewhere, in spite of  my total lack of writing vocation. Other times I happen to have nothing to say. Nothing, nothing!... And that void to hang on for days, even weeks ahead.
Those are the moments in which the things I sew represent my manner of expression. My unsaid or unwritten words. Born out of nothing, my handwork doesn't say a particular story, instead it leaves room for free imagination and interpretation. It is the case of today's embroidery, which I hope you'll enjoy.

Have good days ahead and see you soon!

Cu paine si sare / With bread and salt

Caught in daily life’s torment, more rapid and more demanding, we often get to miss real wonders that were given to us, essential conditions to our existence. Wonders that go without saying, often brought into oblivion by perverting them, and thereby failing to understand their profound significance.
Bread is such a wonder. “Our daily bread”, basic food in the feeding process of the Romanian Peasant, deeply respected and honoured. Food for both body and spirit. Witness and mediator of our relationship with the divinity through its kneading, baking and symbolic sacrificing (chunking) at every life’s major event – baptism, marriage and funeral, but also during other spiritual ceremonial moments over the year.

Bread and implicitly wheat always had a sacred value in the Romanian traditional culture. Bread made for the times “of passing” is a special one, bearing the hidden symbols of the sky and Sun. And even though too few women can still “read” their meaning, bread (the ceremonial ring-bread) continues to be baked the same way, bearing those long-given marks – the column of the skies, the solar circle, the symbols of transformation and regeneration – silent evidence of the time the tree of life hadn’t been cut off, the skies still talked to us and people knew how to listen…

Bread also has a magic role, of revealing the future. It is believed that single young women can find out who their fated one is on Saint Nicholas’s eve (the night between 5th and 6th of December). The ritual consists in baking a small, salty white bread the young woman has to eat before going to bed and so she’ll dream the fated one bringing her water to drink. The main condition for her wish to be answered is fasting over the day, purification absolutely necessary to receive this divine clemency.

Furthermore, the ritual bread, baked and eaten in special, “given” days of the year keeps the diseases away from the man and his animals on whose help lay the foundation of man’s entire existence.
The fact that bread has and always had a central role in Romanian traditional culture is shown by the multitude of sayings with and about bread, but also by the fact that the greatest form of hospitality and respect towards our guests is welcoming them with bread and salt. Both on a white towel, hand-embroidered with mystic symbols, same as those baked on the gift-bread.

I don’t know these mystic symbols, but I made some fabric bags for bread which I hope to be appropriate for such an honour.

Intelesuri ascunse / Hidden meanings

Simboluri.

Symbols.
Some, simpler, speak to us equally.
Others, more complex, whisper their secrets only to those ready to receive their wisdom.

I discovered the symbol above in an article I read about Dacian ancient archetypes and, apparently, it's carved on the gate of Sarmizegetusa sanctuary. I haven't managed to understand its whisper yet, but I felt the need to reproduce it and pass it on...
So far, it's the most difficult embroidery I've made. Not because of the complexity of the stitches I used or the niggling details, but because I could only sew in some days or parts of the day. Thus, pretty often, became hard and weary to continue doing it. I have no explanation for this, but now that's ready, I feel a great joy I've finished it!

A table for two

In the last years I couldn’t help to notice an increasing demand and attention for quality food: bio products and organic fruits and vegetables. Which is a very good thing. Step by step we’re getting closer to what agriculture should be, to what it used to be for us, for our animals and for the lands.
At the same time I couldn’t help to notice an increasing tendency towards sickness. And even though medicine developed a lot, technologically speaking, giving the possibility of tracking down severe diseases in very early stages of evolution, and new drugs are to be found in hospitals and pharmacies, we get sicker and sicker as years go by.
Sure, the factors are numerous: air pollution, radiations, noise pollution, the city hastiness, the apparent lack of time that makes us constantly live in a hurry and so on… But we all want a better life and for that maybe the easiest thing to be changed is our way of feeding.

What we seem not to have noticed yet is that the way we eat and the attitude we have during our meals are just as important as food itself if not more important.
It matters if we are calm and comfortable when we sit down to eat, it matters if we eat consciously and by that be aware of how our meal really tastes, aware of whether we really like it not, aware of the effect it has on our body and aware of whether the kind of food we eat is a necessity for us or not. It matters if we are grateful for the generous gifts of the land or for the sacrifice of the animal who's meat we are consuming.

If we don’t keep in mind these “minor details” as well, no matter how bio or organic our food is it will always be ineffective.
It will always be alimentation instead of nourishment.

In acelasi timp, am mai remarcat si o tendinta crescuta catre a ne imbolnavi.

somewhere, over the rainbow...

sometimes, in our darkest times, beauty grimly fights to come to grass. when all seems lost and helpless and things become meaningless, there’s always something inside of us sliding out its light.
is it just a compensation?... is it, maybe, an expression of the effort to keep our mind in one place, a way to “burn” and overcome our neurosis?...
or rather a mirror, laid in front of our eyes by the Self, for us to see that we are more than loss, pain and darkness put together? that we are not a prison, but the green field who turns suffering into flowers and tears into rainbow…

this napkin above is one my first embroideries and, at the same time, one of my dearest.
the delicacy of this combination of colours - light blue-light brown - always brings back the gentleness of early winter mornings, when here and there, small branches peep their sleepy heads out of snow's protective collar.
